In 1985 Žalec Municipal Library moved to new location and broadened its activities and programmes. From 1993 to 1999 the library, with its six branches in nearby towns, functioned as a unit of Žalec Institution for Culture, Sport and Tourism, but with the subsequent municipal reorganisation new municipal libraries were estabished. In 2002 the Žalec Inter Municipal Central Library became a public institution, with 10 branches (Vransko, Prebold, Polzela, Braslovče, Tabor, Šempeter, Griže, Liboje, Ponikva and Petrovče). Since 1990 intensive computerisation has taken place here, and since 1995 the collection has been searchable via the COBISS - Slovene Virtual Library system. As a public library the aims of Žalec Inter Municipal Central Library are to function as an information centre and to introduce people to IT (two computers available). Future plans include expanding access to books through the introduction of of a mobile library service. The library organises occasional exhibitions.
