The Goethe-Institut Ljubljana (GI Ljubljana) is an official cultural institute of the Federal republic of Germany in Slovenia, which not only informs about the multifaceted picture of Germany, but also promotes German language. It was established in April 2004, expanding the programme activities of the old German Reading Room, which had existed within the Central Technological Library, University of Ljubljana since 1995. The Institute offers detailed information relating to German and European issues, especially in the field of education and culture. It supports and coorganises cultural events nationwide: exhibitions, readings and speeches with German speaking authors, concerts and workshops with artists from Germany.

Some examples of the cultural cooperation in Slovenia

The fundamental method of the Goethe-Institute is dialogue based on partnership. In cooperation with Slovenian ministries and schools the GI Ljubljana runs advanced training courses for German teachers.

At the initiative of the GI Ljubljana and in co-operation with 16 European agencies and embassies in Slovenia, the Days of European Film took place in the framework of Festival of Slovene Film at the Portorož Auditorium in October 2007.

German language

The promotion of the language includes also the excellence initiative PASCH (Schulen: Partner der Zukunft) of the Federal Republic of Germany. The Goethe-Institute Ljubljana promotes for instance German lessons in Prekmurje. In 2009 five pupils of the PASCH-school in Beltinci were promoted with a scholarship for a youth language course in Germany.

Since 2007 the Goethe Institute Ljubljana runs German exams, which are internationally accepted and never loose their validity.

German Reading Room in Ljubljana

The German Reading Room (Nemška knjižnica) is an independent unit of the Central Technological Library, University of Ljubljana, founded under the auspices of the Goethe Institut and co-funded by the Ministry of Culture. Its main task is to facilitate the German reading culture in Slovenia. Among over 5,000 books there are titles dedicated to German architecture, design, literary theory, humanities and social sciences. The readers can consult over 30 subscribed German magazines. The unit organises also small-scale cultural and informative events.
