KUD Samosvoj (in English: "idiosyncratic") was established by the dancer and choreographer Bara Kolenc, choreographer and light designer Borut Bučinel, and the band Melodrom in 1999. At first a vehicle for Kolenc's and Bučinel's stage work, KUD Samosvoj's productions have been presented at festivals in Italy, Austria, Germany, Armenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia (at the Gibanica (Moving Cake) Festival of Slovene Dance, among others).
The artists usually work together: Melodrom has produced the music for performances and Borut Bučinel has created the light design and stage sets for several Bara's performances. Their work has been presented in Italy, Austria, Germany, Armenia, Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. KUD Samosvoj also produces new productions by young authors, organises dance, theatre and vocal workshops, residencies and site-specific projects.

Over the past decade, KUD Samosvoj has served primarily as a platform for the work of Bara Kolenc. The association has thus been co-producing a series of Kolenc's cross-genre collaborations within different art collectives. The project Threshold (2009–11) brought together an international team of artists from the fields of performing, visual and sonic arts (among others also Atej Tutta and Rado Jaušovec) in a month-long residency at Vipolže Castle and resulted in a series of live multimedia events. Inspired by the Slovenian sculptress Karla Bulovec, the cycle Atelier (2009–15) re-contextualised the topics of historicisation, artistic contextualisation and the woman question, and featured video works, developed by Tutta and Kolenc and co-produced by Ex Ponto International Festival and KIBLA Multimedia Centre, as well as a performance, co-produced by City of Women. Kolenc has also developed work with Ljubljana-based Lou Ambramovici and Teja Reba within the Eat-Art Collective (2013,) a series of research projects, co-produced by Maska Institute and Moderna galerija / Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana plus Museum of Contemporary Art Metelkova, which were also featured at the 7th U3 Triennial of Contemporary Slovene Arts.

Bara Kolenc has collaborated with many Slovene dance practitioners and artists, including Maja Delak, Tomaž Štrucl, Diego de Brea, Gregor Kamnikar, Sanja Grcič, Silvan Omerzu, Dušan Teropšič, Giordi de Molina, Borut Bučine, Nina Meško, Alma Lapajne, Urška Samec, Vlado Škafar, Boris Mihalj and Barbara Novakovič Kolenc, for a range of dance, theatre, film, fashion and music projects. In addition she teaches at the KUD Pozitiv Cultural Association and the Pre-School Education and Grammar School, Ljubljana. She has received several awards for her work. After graduating in Philosophy and Comparative Literature (2004) she started conceiving theatre through theory. She is currently working on her PhD dealing with the Theory of Theatre at the Department of Philosophy, University of Ljubljana.

Kolenc's latest cycle of works Metamorphoses 1°–5° (2011–ongoing) is a series of projects (contemporary theatre, video, installation, lecture-performances) that reflect on fundamental contemporary questions in dialogue with Ovid's Metamorphoses. Among the projects' co-producers are Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture, KUD Pozitiv Cultural Association, Bunker Institute, Mladinsko Theatre, City Museum of Ljubljana. The project concept Metamorphoses 4º: BLACKHOLES by Bara Kolenc & Atej Tutta was selected to receive the TT Stückemarkt Commission of Work 2016. The work was produced at Schauspiel Dortmund in 2017 and presented at the Brut Theatre in Vienna. In 2018, the work Metamorphoses 4º: BLACKHOLES saw its Slovene premiere at Mladinsko Theatre.

The stage and film work of Borut Bučinel is based on the research of light, scenography and space, and also the atmosphere, brought by vivid artistic compositions. He has collaborated with many other artists in various roles as light designer, scenographer, choreographer or dancer, including Branko Potočan, Sebastjan Starič, Silvan Omerzu, Želimir Žilnik, Bara Kolenc, Igor Sviderski, Sanja Neškovic Peršin, Barbara Novakovič Kolenc, Boris Mihalj, Dušan Teropšič, Dejan Srhoj, Blaž Završnik, Bojan Matjašic and others. He has been awarded several acknowledgements for his work.

KUD Samosvoj Cultural Association is a non-profit cultural association established in 1999. Although mainly active in the fields of contemporary theatre, dance and music production, KUD Samosvoj has also produced some intermedia and literary projects.

Background

KUD Samosvoj (in English: "idiosyncratic") was established by the dancer and choreographer Bara Kolenc, choreographer and light designer Borut Bučinel, and the band Melodrom in 1999. At first a vehicle for Kolenc's and Bučinel's stage work, KUD Samosvoj's productions have been presented at festivals in Italy, Austria, Germany, Armenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Slovenia (at the Gibanica (Moving Cake) Festival of Slovene Dance, among others).

Production and international networking
