Candidates may be nominated by a cultural institution, by a fine arts association, by the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU), by the Ministry of Culture, or by an individual.
The winner is selected by a special board consisting each year of new members from four institutions (two from each): Museum of Modern Art, Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU), and the Association of Slovene Art Critics.
In recent years the Rihard Jakopič Award has been bestowed to Marjetica Potrč (2003) known internationally for her interdisciplinary practice which includes on-site projects, research, architectural case studies, and series of drawings; Irwin (2004); Bogoslav Kalaš (2006); Srečo Dragan (2007) the pioneer of Slovene video art and former member of the group OHO; Marko Pogačnik(2008) the former OHO group member and internationally known artist engaged in geomantic and Earth healing work by the method of using lithopunctures. In 2009 Tadej Pogačar of P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E. Institute was selected out of 9 candidates for the project CODE:RED, a research of the parallel informal economies. The recent recepients are the painters Berko (2010) and Zmago Lenardič (2011).
