There are many Slovenian institutions that conduct research of Slovenian literature and develop programmes for literary education. Central among these are of course universities, as well as the National and University Library and the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts. Some of these institutions also offer grants and exchange programmes for international researchers and students.
Slovene literary theory has historical roots at the Department of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at the University of Ljubljana. It was there that a seminar of comparative literature was first held in 1926. Today the department offers 2 graduate study programmes and a doctoral study programme in Literary Theory.
One ot its principle focuses is research on Slovene literature and literary studies, as well as related artistic, aesthetic, cultural, and historical issues. An additional focus includes theoretical and methodological issues, the modes of existence of literature, its functional, systemic, reception, and axiological aspects, and their reflection in various directions of literary studies.
