The Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (abbreviated in Slovenian as ZRC SAZU) was founded by the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU) in 1981. It is a network of 18 institutes from the fields of the humanities and natural sciences. ZRC carries out the Slovene national research programme and as an independent institution in its own right, engages in research into Slovenia’s natural and cultural heritage.

    Institutes

The Research Centre implements its research programmes in institutes dedicated to the following fields: Slovenian language, Slovenian literature and literary studies, archaeology, history, art history, cultural history, musicology, ethnomusicology, ethnology, anthropology and spatial studies, geography, the Karst region, palaeontology, biology, philosophy, Slovenian migration studies, sociomedical studies, and interdisciplinary research on memory, linguistics and politics of representation in Slovenia and South-East Europe.

    Funding

Funding for ZRC SAZU's projects is provided from Slovenia's national budget, predominantly through public tenders issued by the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. A part of the basic research is funded by different international private or governmental funds, while industry and enterprises support some applied research projects. ZRC SAZU's research strategies and policies are made and monitored by its Scientific Council.

    International cooperation

ZRC SAZU is the largest Slovene research centre in the humanities and natural sciences. As an academic institution it plays an important role in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. Within the past 10 years in particular it has become increasingly involved in international research projects in the European Union, either through the European Commission, the European Science Foundation, or other organisations. Researchers of the ZRC SAZU publish some 30 scientific monographs and 600 scientific papers in Slovenia and abroad every year.

ZRC SAZU has its own publishing house and a bookstore.
