The Original Slovene Picture Book Award, since 2011 named Kristina Brenk Award has been bestowed annually by the Chamber of Publishing and Bookselling since 2004. First it was conferred on 2 April, the international day of children's books, then on 22 October, the birthday of the acknowledged author of children books Kristina Brenk (1911–2009).

The jury selects five nominees from 30 to 40 submitted proposals which are then allowed to wear the trade-mark of the Original Slovene Picture Book. The award-winning book is announced at a special event.

Many of the awarded books have been illustrated by Andreja Peklar, Zvonko Čoh, Lila Prap, Jelka Reichman, Peter Škerl, Suzi Bricelj, and Matjaž Schmidt, recently also by younger authors (see the list online).
