The Moderna galerija Library was established in 1947 as a research facility serving the needs of the Museum's professional staff and qualified researchers. Today the library comprises an important reference collection of more than 61,000 books, catalogues, periodicals, and other publications devoted to Slovene and international art of the 20th and 21st centuries.

The emphasis of the library is on reference publications on art theory, painting, sculpture, graphic art, photography, performance, video, new media, and architecture. Its collection of exhibition catalogues from all of the galleries in Slovenia as well as numerous international institutions (mostly obtained on an exchange basis) are of particular importance. Additionally, over 180 specialised magazine and newspaper titles from the areas of the library´s interest are available to its users. The library also keeps the books and legacies of individual Slovene artists, including Rihard Jakopič, Gojmir Anton Kos, Miha Maleš, Stane Kregar, Slavko Smolej, and Lojze Spacal.

An online bibliographic database representing only a part of the library's collection is available on the Internet at the COBISS - Slovene Virtual Library.
