The Public Institute of Notranjska Regional Park was established by the Municipality of Cerknica in 2002 to protect, preserve, and research the Notranjska nature park area. The park, covering approximately 222 km², is home to numerous animal and plant species and a wide variety of habitats. Among its most valuable features are Lake Cerknica, the largest intermittent lake in Europe, extensive wetlands, and various Karst habitats such as the picturesque Rakov Škocjan Karst valley. One of the institute’s goals is also to raise awareness of cultural and natural heritage conservation. To this end, visitors can explore the Visitor Center Lake Cerknica or the Museum of Lake Cerknica and take part in a wide range of educational and recreational activities.
