Originally established in 1955 as a subsidiary of the Serbian Society of Film Artists. It functioned both as an independent film production company and as an additional production house to the original Triglav Film, which had been operational since 1946.

Up to the end of 1955 its film studio was located at Zrinjskega 9 in Ljubljana, occupying government premises in the grounds of St. Joseph's Church. After denationalisation in 1996, new premises were built for Viba in Ljubljana's Stegne industrial zone, with facilities for film production, post-production and the administration of the public institution taking up nearly 10,000 square metres of space. Viba Film Studio acquired its status as a national technical foundation in 1994, the same year as the Slovene Film Fund was founded.
The Viba budget is maintained on the basis of price lists and lists of film services which producers define precisely when their projects are accepted into the programme of the Slovene Film Fund. On the basis of a similar agreement, Viba also co-operates in student productions at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT), both in the shooting of films and during post-production.
