Slovene literary theory has historical roots at the Department of Comparative Literature and Literary Theory at the University of Ljubljana. It was there that a seminar of comparative literature was first held in 1926. Today the department offers 2 graduate study programmes and a doctoral study programme in Literary Theory.

Background

In 1929 comparative literature became an independent study programme, with vibrant years of academic development following after the Second World War. This period saw the implementation of new study methods and prominent members of the department, among them literary theorist Dušan Pirjevec (1921–1977).

There are currently seven professors, three assistant and associate professors, and a number of experts from other departments and institutions teaching at the department. The well-stocked library provides students with (mainly) works of literary theory both classical and contemporary.

International cooperation and student exchange

The department signed several agreements with European universities. It has been a member of the Erasmus student and academic staff exchange since 2003. It has bilateral cooperation agreements with universities in Austria (University of Vienna), the Czech Republic (University of Paradubice), Italy (University of Foggia and University of Naples), Poland (University of Bielsko-Bialej), and Spain (University of Zaragoza).
