The Department was established relatively recently, in 1987, when it was formed as an independent department within the Faculty of Arts. The establishing of the department was in the domain of Professor Branko Berčič. He studied Slavic languages at the Faculty of Arts and for several years worked at the research centre of National and University Library.
Prior to 1987 a Chair for Librarianship functioned at the Faculty of Education. It encourages international cultural exchange in the fields of arts, culture and heritage. The portal and its content is owned and funded by the Ministry of Culture, funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Plan and developed by Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory.
