The Goethe-Institut Ljubljana (GI Ljubljana) is an official cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany in Slovenia, which not only informs about the multifaceted picture of Germany, but also promotes German language. It was established in April 2004, expanding the programme activities of the old German Reading Room, which had existed within the Central Technological Library, University of Ljubljana since 1995. The Institute offers detailed information relating to German and European issues, especially in the field of education and culture. It supports and co-organises cultural events nationwide: exhibitions, readings and speeches with German speaking authors, concerts and workshops with artists from Germany. The fundamental method of the Goethe-Institute is dialogue based on partnership.

Some examples of the cultural cooperation in Slovenia

At the initiative of the GI Ljubljana and in cooperation with 16 European agencies and embassies in Slovenia, the Days of European Film took place in the framework of Festival of Slovene Film at the Portorož Auditorium in October 2007.

In cooperation with the Academy of Design and Chevrolet Europe the GI Ljubljana organized in April 2009 a fashion show as a Kick-off-event for the fashion competition createeurope 2009.

In December 2009 the GI Ljubljana was initiator of a joint project of the Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film and the 6th Animateka International Animated Film Festival at Kinodvor Cinema in Ljubljana.

The year 2010 started with a competition for the most catching and funniest slogans on the subject of climate change in German language. In May the GI Ljubljana presented the theatre project kulturabend.de together with five Slovenian Schools and one Hungarian School. Young people from Slovenia and Hungary showed their German knowledge in a different, very creative way in Beltinci.

German language

The promotion of the German language also includes the excellence initiative PASCH (Schulen: Partner der Zukunft) of the Federal Republic of Germany. For instance, the Goethe-Institute Ljubljana promotes German lessons in Prekmurje. In 2009 five pupils of the PASCH-school in Beltinci were promoted with a scholarship for a youth language course in Germany.

Since 2007 the Goethe Institute Ljubljana runs German exams, which are internationally accepted and never lose their validity.

In cooperation with Slovenian ministries and schools the GI Ljubljana runs also advanced training courses for German teachers.

German Reading Room in Ljubljana

The German Reading Room (Nemška knjižnica) is an independent unit of the Central Technological Library, University of Ljubljana, founded under the auspices of the Goethe Institut and co-funded by the Ministry of Culture. Its main task is to facilitate the German reading culture in Slovenia. Among the over 5,000 books there are titles dedicated to German architecture, design, literary theory, humanities and social sciences. Readers can consult over 30 subscribed German magazines. The unit also organises small-scale cultural and informative events.
