Intima Virtual Base - Institute for Contemporary Arts was established in 1996 by intermedia artist Igor Štromajer as a non-governmental artistic institution that serves mostly as the platform for his projects in which he as a rule colaborates with many partners - individuals and institutions. In last years the permanent co-operation with Brane Zorman is to notice. Intima Virtual Base alias Štromajer deals in different creative media and forms of activity: contemporary performing arts, radio and sound projects, performance art theory, body-related theory and women's studies, music, dance and choreography, philosophy, photography, video, design and computer graphics. Intima is also a producer of contemporary performing arts projects, interactive theatre installations, web art projects, online conferences, exhibitions, word events and many other artistic actions.

Background

Igor Štromajer, who graduated at the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT), tackles in his intermedia projects tactical emotional states and traumatic low-tech emotional strategies. He has shown his work at more than 100 exhibitions and festivals in 50 countries and received a number of international awards.

Beside the both biggest national instititions for contemporary arts as the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana or Maribor Art Gallery, his works are included in the permanent collections of the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia (Madrid), and the Computerfinearts Gallery (New York). As an artist-in-residence he lectured at universities and contemporary arts institutes in Europe, the USA and Canada.

Projects

Internationally-renowned projects by Štromajer include: [i want to share you - what are you doing to me?] for Porto 2001 - Capital Europeia da Cultura, Serralves Museum, Portugal; S.HTML security - a net monument, 2003; We Finns, We Don't Use Chains! - a dystopian territorial database, Antwerp, 2003; and wPack wireless packages, a distribution centre, 2004.

Ballettikka Internettikka is on ongoing internet guerilla performance study developed in collaboration with B Zorman. It comprised 'net.ballet' on the Internet, 2001, 'ballet.net' in Moscow, 2002, 'M-III robot net ballet' in Ljubljana and Bergen 2003 and Milan 2004, presentations in Belgrade and Berlin and the 2007 'Sttattika' staged in Hong Kong and Bremen. Another project is Oppera Internettikka, a series of low-tech internet opera art projects begun in 1998. It explores the combination of classical opera tactics and strategies, together with singing HTML source code, text-to-speech software, Java scripts and applets. The project was presented in Skopje, Berlin, Ljubljana, New Delhi, Montpellier and on Internet. In 2007 Intima Virtual Base toured to Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Santiago, Chile, the Sputtnikk Oppera was presented in Skopje, Macedonia, and the live Internet performance 7012: Die Die Die Beauty project was performed in Montpellier, France.

A catalogue of selected texts, images and documentation of the Intima Virtual Base opus is available at the website.
