Since its establishing in 1971 by curators Ljerka Menaše and Eva Gspan, the Modern Art Archive of the Moderna galerija (Museum of Modern Art) is systematically collecting, organizing and updating the archive of Slovene art of 20th and 21st centuries, as well thoroughly documents the situation and development of the contemporary Slovene fine arts sector (in the broadest sense: its authors as well as writers, curators, owners, venues). Between 2001 and 2003 the Department has co-operated with similar European institutions in the framework of VEKTOR (the European Contemporary Art Archives project), which has its contination in the platform EAN.

• The Documentation Department focuses on the systematically collecting and organising data on exhibitions in Slovenia and on the appearances of Slovene artists on the exhibitions abroad. Those from the invitations, catalogues and press clippings collected data have been digitised since 1989, using a special Razstava (Exhibition) software programme.

• The Department is compiling bio-bibliographies of 20th/21st century artists residing in Slovenia - since 1993 those data has been instantly accessible via the Umetnik (Artist) computer programme.

• Further the Documentation Department also built an archive and whole text articles press clippings service. As the first stage of the project a selection from the Moderna galerija local databases is available online in the Raz Ume web resource. In the moment it contains 13.487 artists, 8.278 exhibitions and 77 photographs.

• Collecting and organizing the documentation photography is the domain of the autonomous department Moderna galerija Ljubljana Photo Archive. Another autonomous department of the Moderna galerija (Museum of Modern Art) helpful for researcher to receive further resources is the Moderna galerija Ljubljana Library.
