In 2009 the City Museum of Ljubljana and City Art Museum Ljubljana merged into a new public institute City Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana. The merger was part of Ljubljana Urban Municipality's cultural development plans for 2008-2011, endorsed in June 2008.

Beside the City Museum of Ljubljana and its unit the Ščit - Conservatory Centre of the City Museum of Ljubljana the new institute manages now besides its former 4 dislocated facilities (Vžigalica Gallery, Jakopič Gallery, Tobacco Museum in ex Tobacco Factory complex on Tržaška street and Memorial Room of Writer Ivan Cankar on Rožnik hill) also 4 further facilities which before the fusion belonged to the City Art Museum Ljubljana: two spaces of the former City Art Museum Ljubljana, one on the Mestni trg 5 (before the main exhibiting space and the headquarters of the City Art Museum Ljubljana) and second on Cankarjevo nabrežje 11/1), inclusive both spaces in Bežigrad, namely the Bežigrajska galerija 1. and 2.

The fusion is in base keeping established mission of each space with the intention to improve concepts of each.

Novelties planned for the end of 2010/beginning of 2011

Indeed in the end of 2010 the City Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana are planning some changes: the space of the City Art Museum Ljubljana on Cankarjevo nabrežje 11/1 will be closed, but the new house of 350m2 in the complex of Tobacco factory will open. The smaller part of the house is going to present the collection of the Tobacco Museum Collection, the huger part will be the space for presentations of contemporary art projects. The house will also offer the very first artist residency in Ljubljana, where approximately 4 foreign artists per year is going to be chosen after the public call is going to be published. Beside the AiR Celeia Celje - the artist-in-residence programme in Celje, such residency in Ljubljana will be the second possibility for foreign artists and curators to come gathering inspirations, knowledge and contacts in Slovenia.
