In 2025, Celje received the permanent title of UNESCO City of Literature, being the second Slovenian city after Ljubljana to be included in the UNESCO’s City of Literature programme. With this title, Celje was recognized for its commitment to the promotion of literature and reading culture. Among the more important literary aspects of Celje, one can mention the annual Veronika Award for the best poetry collection, as well as the publishing house Mohor's Society that is based in the city.
