In 2025, Celje received the permanent title of UNESCO City of Literature, being the second Slovenian city after Ljubljana to be included in the UNESCO’s City of Literature programme. With this title, Celje was recognized for its commitment to the promotion of literature and reading culture. Among the more important literary aspects of Celje, one can mention the annual Veronika Award for the best poetry collection, the publishing house Mohor's Society and the Celje Central Library, which is also one of the coorganizers of the largest Slovenian literature festival Fabula. Celje was also the home of the famous traveller and writer Alma Karlin.
