After many years of endless public debates, failed civil initiatives and postponed public construction plans Kino Šiška – Centre for Urban Culture was finally established by the [[Municipality of Ljubljana]]. The reconstruction of the modernist building, the domicile of the former Šiška Cinema, represents the biggest municipal financial investment in the Ljubljana cultural infrastructure in years, if not decades.

Legally Kino Šiška is a public institution. Its very name (Centre for Urban Culture) suggests the curious mixture of lasting desire of two urban generations for larger concert space in Ljubljana. Kino Šiška is organiser, producer and co-producer of various events, but above all it functions as a programme manager and mediator between numerous concert organisers, booking agents, independent music producers and cultural needs of concert goers.

The name of the centre means Cinema Šiška, with Šiška being the name of this particular Ljubljana neighbourhood. It is inherited from the building in which it is stationed, a cinema built in 1961 as one of the first Ljubljana buildings characterised by modernist architecture (the work of Slovenian architect [[Božidar Gvardjančič]]). In 2001 the cinema closed its doors for good and was afterwards but sporadically used for various art projects, dance and theatre performances, workshops, and so on.
