[[Ljubljana Dance Theatre (PTL)]] was founded in [[established::1984]] by Ksenija Hribar and a group of dancers as the first professional contemporary dance company in Slovenia. Throughout the 1980s PTL played a pioneering role in the development and promotion of contemporary dance in Slovenia. Most of today's contemporary dance choreographers and dancers have collaborated with the company, and some of them founded their own companies in the 1990s (e.g. [[Flota Institute]], [[Fourklor]]).

During two decades of creative activities, over 70 full-length dance-theatre productions and productions for children have been staged and several of them have won awards. Since 1991 PTL has organised five international Video/Film Dance Festivals, and in 1993 it presented three premiere performances in the Cultural Capital of Europe festivities in Belgium. Nowadays PTL functions as an umbrella production house to several choreographers with very different modes of aesthetic expression, and regularly premieres new productions (in 2008 by Snježana Premuš, Tina Janežič and Nataša Tovirac) or shows for children (Petra Pikalo, Katja Povše). It offers regular contemporary dance education programmes (''Dancelab'') and collaborates internationally in joint productions with guest choreographers and overseas dance festivals (with the Linz Choreography Centre, the Slovak Žilina Centre, the German i-Camp, and the French Dance Centre Colline in 2008). A pioneer in the development and promotion of contemporary dance in Slovenia since 1984, the Dance Theatre Ljubljana (or PTL) is one the most important contemporary dance production venues in Ljubljana, presenting both its own productions and domestic and foreign performances.

PTL offers regular professional contemporary dance classes and, since 2008, organises the biennial Ukrep - Festival of Dance Perspectives.


Background

Ljubljana Dance Theatre was initiated by the choreographer and dancer Ksenija Hribar (also one of the co-founders of the London Contemporary Dance Theatre and recipient of the Župančič Award of the City of Ljubljana) and co-founded with the choreographer and director Damir Zlatar Frey. The establishment of the theatre presented a decisive step towards the professionalisation of contemporary dance in Slovenia and the then-Yugoslavia. Under the artistic leadership of Ksenija Hribar (Damir Zlatar Frey left the theatre in 1986), PTL was an open dance-theatre group that created a number of stylistically ground-breaking and widely influential performances. Until 1996, when PTL obtained its own rehearsal and performing spaces in the Prule neighbourhood of Ljubljana, the majority of performances were presented on the stages of Cankarjev dom, the Mladinsko Theatre, Kapelica Gallery and elsewhere. During the following years, the theatre was led artistically by Ksenija Hribar, Matjaž Farič and Sinja Ožbolt.

PTL collaborates with the majority of Slovene independent institutes and regularly engages in international co-productions. Its productions frequently appear at the Gibanica (Moving Cake) Festival of Slovene Dance, which it has been co-organising since its beginnings in 2003. Each year, Ljubljana Dance Theatre also produces a début by an emerging maker, offering rehearsal spaces and post-production support.

Dance Theatre Ljubljana is a partner in the Transferzala project, a combined season ticket for six independent Ljubljana theatres: besides PTL, also Mini Theatre, Španski borci Culture Centre, Stara Elektrarna - Old Power Station, Vodnik Homestead and Glej Theatre.
