Kino Šiška is a centre for contemporary culture in Ljubljana established and opened for the public in September 2009. It is dedicated mainly to various music events, nevertheless theatre, dance and variety of visual arts and new media art events also feature in its regular programme. There are more than 270 events annually attracting over 67.000 visitors.

The venue consists of two technically equipped and adaptable multi-functional halls: the large Katedrala Hall can hold from 800 to 1000 visitors standing for music concerts, the small Komuna Hall can hold up to 120 seats. The lobby in front of the Katedrala Hall serves as a flexible exhibition and project space named Kamera. The Kino Šiška Café is a popular hangout for the entire Šiška Cultural Quarter.

The venue, urban culture and programme

After many years of endless public debates, failed civil initiatives and postponed public construction plans Kino Šiška – Centre for Urban Culture was finally established by the Municipality of Ljubljana. The reconstruction of the modernist building, the domicile of the former Šiška Cinema, represents the biggest municipal financial investment in the Ljubljana cultural infrastructure in years, if not decades.

Legally Kino Šiška is a public institution. Its very name (Centre for Urban Culture) suggests the curious mixture of lasting desire of two urban generations for larger concert space in Ljubljana. Kino Šiška is organiser, producer and co-producer of various events, but above all it functions as a programme manager and mediator between numerous concert organisers, booking agents, independent music producers and cultural needs of concert goers.

The scope of music presented in Kino Šiška varies from mainstream and indie rock & pop, reggae, jazz, electronic music to more adventurous and experimental music styles.

International cooperation

Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture is one of the 22 European cultural institutions from 15 countries involved in a multi-annual cooperation project funded by the European Commission through the Culture Programme up to December 2014. While during 2011 some modul-dance productions of young choreographers were staged at Kino Šiška, in 2012 (26 May through 8 June) the modul-dance platform joins the PLESkavica Festival and the Ukrep - Festival of Dance Perspectives in the CoFestival to reflect on contemporary dance concepts and positions.
