The Photonic Moments – Month of Photography was launched by Photon Gallery in Ljubljana in 2005 with the aim of presenting contemporary authorial photography developments in Central and South East Europe and its broader global context. In a region with just a few institutions that specialise in contemporary photography research and theory, the festival has grown into an important platform for networking, transitioning, and establishing new cultural connections.

In 2014, the festival merged with the Video in Progress Festival. In 2018 and 2019, the festival only lasts for a week and is taking place under the name Fotonični teden / Photonic Week

Background

Since 2005 the Photon Gallery has organised the annual Photonic Moments festival, which in 2006 already expanded into the "Ljubljana Month of Photography" autumn events, through which the Photon Gallery started to contribute to the international platform dedicated to photography under the name "European Month of Photography" (Berlin, Paris, Vienna, etc.). Since 2008 the programme by Photon takes place biennially under the name Photonic Moments - Month of Photography.

The festival's programme committee has involved many figures of Slovenian contemporary art and photography, including Dejan Sluga, Miha Colner, Antonio Živkovič, Rajko Bizjak, Jan Babnik, Vasja Nagy, and Peter Koštrun. Each edition of the festival hosts several international curators.

Programme and venues

The 5th edition of the Photonic Moments – Month of Photography in 2010 presented a number of group exhibitions as well as solo shows. The main venue Cankarjev dom hosted the central group exhibition Tension Field exploring different tendencies in the development of art photography in the region since 1980, which was accompanied by a two-day forum "Talks on Contemporary Photography". The Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana hosted and co-organized 3 exhibitions at their venues: Lee Miller's photography at the Jakopič Gallery, Trine Sondergaard & Gina Zaccharias at the City Art Gallery Ljubljana and Marko Jamnik at the Vžigalica Gallery. In the framework of the festival several exhibitions were presented also in Maribor, Celje, Novo mesto, Škofja Loka, Trbovlje and Ptuj.

Sections

The 2010 edition of the festival was divided into five sections: Enlarger with the main exhibition and research project Tension Field; Exposition presenting three current regional overviews of productions with a notable curator's touch (Second Half Time, New Serbian Photography, Present Continuous); Diffuse contains interesting presentations of 2 different solo projects (Jeffrey Silverthorne, Trine Sondergaard & Gina Zaccharias); Retrospective which turned to the historic photographic production (Lee Miller; Gojmir Anton Kos); Flash forming the frame of the festival with a line of exhibitions presenting (Milan Pajk, Goran Bertok, Marko Lipuš, Tomaž Tomažin, Antonio Živkovič, Nataša Košmerl, Branko Lenart).

International collaborations

Photon Gallery collaborates with a dispersed network of partner organizations, in 2010 with the Cultural City Network Graz, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Rijeka, Museum of Contemporary Art Skopje, Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina, Novi Sad and House of Photography from Bratislava.

In 2010 the forum "Talks on Contemporary Photography" was organised next to a big central exhibition Tension Field with an international team of curators from Bratislava, Graz, Ljubljana, Novi Sad, Rijeka, and Skopje. The selection of Slovenian photographers included Damjan Kocjančič, Jože Suhadolnik, and Antonio Živkovič.
