The library was founded side by side with the then Museum of Arhitecture Ljubljana in 1972 to focus on collecting material in the areas of the Museum's research and subjects of its departments. At first the library was located at the Plečnik House at Karunova ulica 4 in Ljubljana, in 1992 most of the material was moved together with the museum to Fužine Castle, keeping only the Plečnik library at the old address.
