Festivals in Slovenia

Festivals in slovenia 2012.jpgThe printed version of the calendar of Festivals in Slovenia in 2012 contains 141 festivals. Later on, in 2019, the festival number rose to 199. Check out the current annual festivalscape! Since 2012, the annual festivalscapes are provided as an infographic, conceived by the Culture.si team at the Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory. The interactive calendars include the festivals from the Culture.si database arranged by weeks and by field. You can see specific types of festivals, e.g., music festivals only, by clicking on the corresponding artistic field. Take a look at the Festivals in Slovenia infographic.

Launched in 2012, the music series Sound Disobedience (in Slovenian, Neposlušno) describes its creed as an aim to facilitate conditions for music risk-taking and improvisation. Founded by Sploh Institute, which has been working on improvised music and theatre performing arts production since 1999, the series follows on the heels of the institute's other successful projects of recent years, the Con-Fine Aperto concert series and the regular workshop called Search and Reflect (in Slovenian: RR–Raziskava, refleksija). The festival is an extension of both of these projects, presenting the two in a somewhat condensed form.

By way of concerts, workshops, lectures, and other forms of communicating musical ideas and ideas about music, Sound Disobedience annually creates an international programme, which is co-produced by the Španski borci Culture Centre.

Kurja polt Genre Film Festival

The Kurja polt Genre Film Festival is a niche, artistically quite ambitious, festival that unearths and puts forward particularly worthy pieces of genre cinema, with a focus on horror film. Treating this genre in a very unconfined way, the festival reflects and presents it through retrospectives, featured as the core programme, and through a smaller selection of contemporary films. Its name meaning "goosebumps", the festival was established in 2014 and takes place at Slovenian Cinematheque and Kinodvor Cinema.

Sonica is a festival of (electronic) music as well as sound and experimental art. In a way, it is conceived as a showcase of the annual programme produced by the hyperactive MoTA Museum of Transitory Art. Its experimental nature questions exhibition and staging formats, crossing borders between art and theory, object and performance. Sonica was launched in the year 2009.

In the past, Sonica has presented artists like Tim Hecker, Rashad Becker, Emptyset, Marina Rosenfeld, Herman Kolgen, Ryoichi Kurokawa and Random Logic.

Druga godba Festival is nowadays a major Slovene international world music festival. It was established in 1984 as an alternative and supplement to other music festivals in Ljubljana of that time which did not present the more radical and "different" music practices. Since its inception Druga godba Festival has developed into one of the most significant European festivals of its type, establishing collaborations with many other important festivals and becoming a member of the international European Forum of Worldwide Music Festivals (EFWMF).

Since 2013, Druga godba Institute has expanded the festival programme throughout the whole year with the concert cycle Sogodbe. This cycle, which takes place at various locations, continues the broad scope of the main festival and is bridled by neither genre nor continent. Besides staging concerts, Sogodbe also feature workshops, discussions and exhibitions.
