A Short Historical Overview of Slovene Film

In the context of a divided 20th-century Europe, Slovene film aesthetics clearly reflected the country's borderline characteristics. Whilst the influence of social realism was present in Slovene film from an early stage, film aesthetics in Slovenia have oscillated over the years between entertainment and politics, art and industry, aesthetics and ideology.

    The 10th Days of Slovenian Film in Belgrade will present a number of contemporary Slovenian films and classics. Several directors and actors will also be in attendance. This year's Days will open with two photography exhibits: one documenting the previous Days and the other showcasing the work of photographer Irena Herak, who documented the Days in 2016. A notable event is also the meeting of students of Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT) in Ljubljana and students of Belgrade's Faculty of Dramatic Arts.

    The event is supported by Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia Belgrade and organised by Slovenian Film Centre, Slovene Society Slava Beograd, Faculty of Philology Belgrade and Yugoslav Film Archive.

    A projection of "Snatched from the Source - Zajeti v izviru: Slovenski otroci Lebensborna", a documentary film about last living Slovenian victims of the Nazi racial experiment: Ingrid von Oelhafen, Hay Henry Hayder, Franc Zagožen, and Ivan Acman. After the projection, there will be a talk with the director Maja Weiss, the writer Nataša Konc Lorenzutti and professor Marija Wakounig from the University of Vienna. In collaboration with Institut für Osteuropäische Geschichte der Universität Wien and Bela Film.

    "Family Therapy - Odrešitev za začetnike" by director Sonja Prosenc is an international coproduction, supported by Slovenian Film Centre, Viba Film Studio, Italian Ministry of Culture and Friuli-Venezia Giulia Film Comission, and Creative Europe programme. Collaborating on the project were also Norway, Croatia, and Serbia.

    The film has been chosen as one among ten winners of International Narrative Competition of the Tribeca festival and will be shown for the first time at the festival, followed by multiple projections on Broadway.

    Several Slovene productions will be shown at the festival. Documentaries "Cinema Volta - Kino Volta" by Martin Turk and "Cent'anni - Sto let" by Maja Doroteja Prelog; short films "How I Learned to Hand Laundry - Kako sem se naučila obešati perilo" by Barbara Zemljič and short animated movie "Octopus Banana Hotchpotch - Hobotnica banana mišmaš" by Milanka Fabjančič. The films were made with support by Slovenian Film Centre. Also included in the programme is the coproduction "Guardians of The Formula - Čuvari fomule" by Dragan Bjelogrlić, and the German-Serbian "Truth - Istina (Resnica)" with Slovene actress Nika Rozman in the main role.
