Mission and objectives
The Slovenian Culture and Information Centre in Vienna was established by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Culture. Its purpose is to create a synergy among the Slovene institutions and organisations and the Austrian cultural institutions, producers and venues, fostering cooperative efforts and facilitating communication. Thus SKICA should become a central forum and a representative of Slovene cultural, education, and science activities in Austria as well as a catalyst of new international projects.
Programme
SKICA endeavours to promote cultural programme while focusing on building a multidisciplinary approach from all study fields and art disciplines. SKICA program is outlined annually, it consists of a few complex projects that are developed in close cooperation with Slovene cultural organisations and Austrian partners, and a number of smaller promotional support projects. SKICA supports also artist-in-residence programme in Vienna organised by Slovene Ministry of Culture.
SKICA programme highlights in 2012 and 2013
During the Vienna Design Week an exhibition Niko Kralj – The King of Chairs took place at the Architekturzentrum Wien. A retrospective exhibition of the legend and one of the pioneers of Slovenian industrial design was prepared by the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana. At the Buch Wien 2012 Slovene book illustration was presented: an overview of Slovene book illustration (1954–2011) was complemented with the exhibition of the award-winners of the Biennial of Slovene Book Illustration 2012. Slovene writers of youger generation Goran Vojnovic, Katja Perat, Nejc Gazvoda, Nataša Kramberger, Anja Golob, Jure Jakob, Vesna Lemaić and Klemen Pisk were presented in spring and autum 2012 to broad audiences at a well-know literary venue Literaturhaus Wien.
In the framework of the designforum Wien 2013 the exhibition Silent Revolutions presenting Slovene product design of the last two decades, took place at the MuseumsQuartier, while the Vienna Design Week hosted the workshop Dementia and Arthritis. What can Design do for me? by Petra Černe Oven and Barbara Predan from Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and Design.
In 2013 SKICA supported SIGIC, Slovene Music Information Centre and Kino Šiška Centre for Urban Culture to organise the presentation of Slovenia as a guest country at the Waves Vienna Music Festival, where among others the bands Coma Stereo, It's Everyone Else, New Wave Syria, N'toko, Toronto Drug Bust and Werefox were promoted.
The film festival Let's CEE presented Slovene films (also Damjan Kozole film retrospective) in 2013, and collaborated in selection for Slovene Film Days at Urania Cinema in April 2014.
