Although its origins may be traced back 120 years, [[Šmarje pri Jelšah Library]] only acquired the status of an autonomous public institution in January 2003. It has branches in Podčetrtek, Bistrica ob Sotli, Kozje and Lesično and co-operates closely with Šmarje pri Jelšah Cultural House. In 2002 the library was enlarged and modernised, and in addition to its 4,000 library items it can now offer its registered readership a multimedia space with five computers, a children’s corner and a study room with seating for 38.
