During its 30 years of existence the Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre has become an important presenter of visual art. Beside the Cankarjev dom Small Gallery and exhibiting wall in the Foyer I, where exhibitions Fine Arts Critics Choice of the Association of Slovenian Fine Art Critics are featured, is the Cankarjev dom Gallery (CD Gallery) the main venue of the Centre exhibiting programme.

Programme and exhibitions

As a mid-scale gallery of 364 square metres it hosts various exhibition programme of visual arts (painting, sculpture and architecture) through new media to complex themed group exhibitions covering also general fields of culture. Its programme often corresponds to multimedia events and festivals of the main Cankarjev dom programme like it was by the Italian Egyptologist Francesco Tiradritti curated exhibition Pharaonic Renaissance in spring 2008. As the central event of the Festival of Egyptian Culture it was accompanied by various programme as screenings of Egyptian film 1947–2006 for example.

In last years the programme of the Centre practices frequently the national focuses like the recent focus on Armenia: within the Armenia Close Up Festival featured the CD Gallery the cultural and historic exhibition Armenian Tradition Between the Secular and the Sacred and showing 62 selected exponents of Armenian church art from the 12 –19th century (curtains, covers, ritual utensils and vestments, as well as a unique khachkar (cross-stone) dating from the 12 –13th century and a Gospel manuscript from the 15th century). The exhibition was prepared in the association with the History Museum of Armenia and devised by its director Anelka Grigoryan. Such international cooperations are established practice of the Centre and CD Gallery.

Beside complex themed group exhibitions focused also on Slovene culture and art as exhibitions The Nude in Slovene Arts, the CD Gallery prepares solo exhibitions by eminent artists (Hamilton, Murtić, German Impressionists and Expressionists) as well as younger avant-garde artists (eg Maria Klonaria and Kateriene Thomadaki), but also solo presentations of Slovene artists as it was the exhibition La comédie humaine of Karel Zelenko in 2008 or the retrospective exhibition of illustrious Slovenian sculptor Dušan Tršar in winter 2009.

Cankarjev dom Gallery is often one of the key exhibition spaces where large exhibition projects take place in Ljubljana, eg 100 Years of Photography, and the Manifesta 3 European Biennial of Contemporary Art held in Ljubljana. It is also a regular venue for the Biennial of Slovene Book Illustration.
