The [[Department of Musicology, University of Ljubljana|Department of Musicology]] was established within the [[Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana]] in [[established::1962]]. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and doctoral research in Musicology.

== Background ==

In 1962 a new Department of Musicology opened its doors at the [[Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana|Faculty of Arts]]. Its first head and full professor became [[Dragotin Cvetko]]. His aspirations were fulfilled and musicology gained success at the university level. As a pioneer of musicology studies he wrote the extensive work ''History of Music in Slovenia''. Along with the donation of renowned musicologist Bruno Nettl, Cvetko's donation of his bibliographic collection on musicology is available in the [[Department of Musicology Library, University of Ljubljana|Library]]. 

Soon after, in 1965, the department began to regularly publish the journal ''[[Musicological Annual]]'' [Muzikološki zbornik]. It publishes articles and scientific papers in Slovenian and English by Slovene and international musicologists. The journal has an international advisory board.

== Research fields==

After the initial efforts with founding the department, the study which includes the history, theory, musical analysis, aesthetics, psychology, and sociology of music has achieved the status of a noteworthy science. 

The departmental teaching staff organise and implement various research projects in the fields of historical and systematic musicology. The main research topics are: Slovene music history and its identity; ethnomusicology; and the aesthetics and sociology of music. Within Slovenia regular cooperation has been established with the [[Scientific and Research Institute of Faculty of Arts]] of the [[University of Ljubljana]] and the [[Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology]]. When it comes to musical historiography the department cooperates with the [[Institute of Musicology]] at the [[Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU)]] and publishes journals, papers and organises meetings, conferences and lectures.

==International cooperation==
With regard to international cooperation, the department cooperates with various institutes and departments of musicology in Croatia (University of Zagreb), Serbia (University of Belgrade), Austria (University of Graz, University of Vienna), Germany (University of Tübingen, University of Freiburg, University of Leipzig, University of Regensburg, Humboldt University), the Czech Republic (University of Brno, Masaryk University) and the United Kingdom (Universities of Oxford, London, Nottingham and Loughborough, Guildhall School of Music), as well as on other international projects. Members of the department have also organised a number of international congresses, conferences and other events.
