The [[Akord Festival Maribor|Akord festival]] was established in [[established::2010]] by the [[MKC Maribor Youth Culture Centre]]. A continuation of the former cycle of open-air ethno music concerts organised in the old city centre of Maribor, the festival put its emphasis on accordion. As accordion holds a very ambiguous position in Slovenia. It is a focal instrument in the commercially very successful and critically disputed ''narodno-zabavna glasba'', which is a term that denotes the so called (polka and waltz based) oberkrainer music and is more present in rural parts, but has recently also regained much popularity with more modern, jazz and world music influenced, urban uses of the instrument. Also, in the course of the festival in 2010, the Slovene and European hymns were adapted for accordion and were a year later, when the festival again took place, freely distributed to the interested public.
