The festival embraces a range of dance forms from ‘pure’ to ‘hybrid’, from the work of both the 'older' generation eg Kovač, Farič, Pograjc, Ožbolt, Bučar, Potočan, to dance pieces by newcomers who are just beginning to make their mark on the dance scene. The festival aspires to present the diversity of the Slovene dance scene and is not restricted to modern dance. Works showcased here cover the many different points of departure originating from classical ballet and various contemporary schools and techniques of dance and sport, and show opportunities to move between different media and genres, creating enough space for the shaping of individual poetics, impulses and differences. Performances presented within the main programme compete for the Gibanica (Moving Cake) Festival of Slovene Dance Award - one is selected by the audience and the other by an international jury.
The main programme of the Moving Cake Festival features around 12 shows by selected Slovene dance artists in competitions for the Moving Cake Award for best work and best choreographer, together with an accompanying programme of fringe productions and workshops, including an international forum which takes a critical look at the Slovene dance scene.
The 2005 festival featured 12 main productions and another four fringe programmes. A number of the presented works avoided classic choreography, but included digital body images and visual artists. The main programme featured 'Amplified Body' by Snježana Premuš, 'Collect-if' by dance group Collect-if, 'What a Feeling!' by Nina Meško, 'Letters from the Present' by Neven Korda, Igor Sviderski and Živa Repovž, 'Forma Interrogativa' by Magdalena Reiter, 'HI-RES' by Male Kline and Maja Delak, and 'Confi-dance' by Goran Bogdanovski and Dejan Srhoj. Also on the main programme were 'Quick Story' by Sanja Neskovič Peršin and Branko Potočan, 'Pedestrian Zone' by Branko Potočan, 'The State of Things' by Nina Meško and Tanja Lazetič, 'Rebeka' by Andreja Rauch and 'Concept of Concept' by Mateja Bučar. Four more productions were featured on the accompanying programme, namely 'Temporary Autonomous Zone' by The Stroj, Matej Kejžar and Aldo Ivančič, 'Catharsis for Beginners' by Jurij Konjar, 'We Are All Marlene Dietrich For' by Emil Hrvatin and Erna Omarsdottir and 'Mozart - Hype as I Wanna Be' by Iztok Kovač. The selection of the programme was entrusted to Martina Hochmuth of the Vienna-based contemporary dance and performance institution Tanzquartier; Mateja Rebolj, a former member of the Slovene National Theatre (SNG) Ljubljana - Opera and Ballet and dancer in numerous contemporary dance and theatre productions; and Rok Vevar, theatre director and art critic. They chose from among 54 productions. Led by Julia Buckroyd of the University of Hertfordshire, the 2005 Festival Workshop was organised under the theme of 'Vital Elements', while the 2005 Festival Forum 'The State of Things' was attended by 37 international guests.
The Gibanica reward of the 3rd showcase of Slovene dance productions 2005–2007 was bestowed to the production Tkalci' ('Weawers') by Andreja Rauch, a special mention was given to an upcoming star of the future Leja Jurišič. The audience award went to Zarjavele trobente ('Rusty Trumpets) by Branko Potočan, Vitkar Institute.
