For the first six years it took place in Bled and in 1967 moved to Ljubljana to Tivoli Hall and then to its now traditional domicile Križanke. later moving to [[Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre]]. It presents the most eminent European, African and American jazz musicians. Many open air or interdisciplinary events accompany the festival, including street performances, film music events at the Slovenian Cinematheque in co-operation with the Cinema-ear, exhibitions of film posters or jazz photography and open-air concerts by the jazz ensemble of Ljubljana Music and Ballet Secondary School.

Festival began life in 1960 as Yugoslavian Jazz Festival. For the first six years it took place in Bled, then in 1967 it moved to Ljubljana to Tivoli Hall and in 1970 finally found its traditional domicile in the attractive outdoor venue of Križanke.
