Established in 1991 amidst the former Sečovlje salt-pans on the right bank of the Giassi channel, the Museum of Salt Making comprises a saltmaker's dwelling with attached bakery and several salt pans, restored by the Piran-based Inter-Communal Office for the Preservation of Natural and Cultural Heritage. The saltmaker's dwelling is a two-storey house which functioned as both family residence (1st floor) and salt store (ground floor). The bakery, which has been reconstructed, is the curiosity of Sečovlje salt works.

The artefacts, photographs and texts which form the collection illustrate the working and living environment of the saltmakers. On the ground floor visitors can learn about the development of saltmaking in the north east Adriatic. Tools used for work in the salt pans and store houses are displayed here, and in nearby restored salt-pans a group of salt workers demonstrate traditional methods.
