The [[National Tourist Association]] was founded in December 1993 as a non-governmental and non-profit organisation with the aim of optimising the contribution of tourism as an economic activity to higher production, economic growth, job creation and faster inclusion in the market economy of the EU and business development. It executes and encourages research within its internal [[International Tourism Institute]], which specialises in the analysis of tourism valorisation, marketing analysis, developmental planning, education and training. The Centre is supported by the Slovene Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs, the [[Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology]] and the Ministry of Small Enterprises and Tourism. In 1999 the project gained additional financial support from the EU Leonardo da Vinci programme. It collaborates with international and EU projects and co-operates with numerous international tourist organisations and associations (including AIEST, WTO, ETC, ASTA, IH&RA, ECTAA, UNEP). The Association publishes the Slovene professional magazine Tourist News five times each year, and also issues the periodical miscellany Academia Turistica. It organises seminars and lectures, thematic meetings involving domestic and foreign experts, and annual international conferences and congresses (eg the 49th International Association of Scientific Experts in Tourism Congress at Portorož in 1999). It has launched the project ‘Rise to Excellence - Topmost Trademarks in Tourism’, developed a business tourist portal and encouraged usage of the Internet, E-business and information technology in Slovene tourism.
