Named after France Stele, a Slovene pioneer in art history and conservation who worked in the first half of the 20th century, the Stele Award is since 1990 bestowed annual to an individual or group for their achievement in the field of conservation of the cultural heritage of Slovenia by the Slovene Conservation Society. Beside the main award the society gives each year also acknowledgements for the field, sometimes also to owners of cultural monuments.


The first award was bestowed to Nace Šumi, representative of the second generation of Slovene art historians. The only group consisting of S. Peterlin and Ivan Stopar received award in 1992. Prizes went last years to Janez Mikuž (2010), Ana Sonja Hoyer (2009) or Peter Fister (2008).
