Similar interventions date already back to the 1960s, when the Associazione Provinciale Artisti (Provincial Artists Association) and later Group 2xGO organized cross border exhibitions and thus provided to the dialogue and confrontation in the then culturally and politically divided environment of Italy and Yugoslavia.
The first Festival was organized by the Slovene association KREA and the Italian association PROLOGO. After a year of pause, the Arhipelag was in 2008 organized by the KUD Limb in collaboration with the Association of arts Coronini (Šempeter pri Gorici), Cultural association and fusion point, Equilibri, Arterrate active in Gorizia and Nova Gorica.
