Awarded annually by Municipality of Ljubljana since 1966, the Župančič Award is named after Slovene writer Oton Župančič (1878–1949). Following the public announcement candidates are selected from among all the authors proposed; selection is carried out by a committee elected by the Mayor of the City who is also its president. One award is given for the life’s work of an author from Municipality of Ljubljana, and three other awards are given to individuals or artistic groups who have in the past year contributed significantly to Ljubljana’s cultural life or who have recently attained international praise for their work.
