Art Video Institute Ljubljana is a non-profit organisation engaged in production, post-production and distribution. Conceived by media theorist, art critic and curator Marina Gržinić and art historian and artist Aina Šmid, the Institute conceives projects that deal with the exposition of culture and visualisation and explore the fields of science and culture, often juxtaposing images of intimacy, sex, mass culture and history.

Marina Gržinić and Aina Šmid have worked together since 1982. Before establishing the Art Video Institute they had a punk band and were involved in performance art. They have collaborated in more than 40 video art projects, made a short 16mm film and created numerous video and media installations; independently they have also directed several video documentaries and television productions. They have presented and exhibited their video works and video installations in more than 100 video festivals around the world and have received several major awards for their video productions. Their 1993 Germany World Video Competition exhibit Luna 10 won awards at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Their works have also been presented at the Videonale, Bonn; at the exhibition ‘Europe-Europe, the Century of Avant garde in Central and Eastern Europe’ in Bonn; as part of the ‘Video Viewpoints Program’ at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; at the London Film Festival; and at the ICC Biennial, Tokyo. In 1997 they realised an interactive CD-ROM for ZKM, Karlsruhe, and were presented in the fourth edition of the Artintact CD-ROM magazine, which focuses on interactive media art and is presented by the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), Karlsruhe. On the Flies of The Market Place (1999) received first prize at the Nuremberg Video Festival in Germany (2000). In 2001 Gržinič and Šmid's large-scale video projection work Silence Silence Silence was presented at the 450 Broadway Gallery in New York, together with a comprehensive screening of their major video works, including the award-winning Labyrinth (1993).

In 2003 a retrospective of their works (1985-2003) was held at the Oberhausen International Short Film Festival, Germany. In 2004 a DVD compilation of their works from 1990s until 2003 was realised in Vienna as part of the INDEX project (http://www.index-dvd.at/de/program/005/).

In 2006 a book on Gržinić and Šmid (works from 1982 to 2005) was published in Slovene under the title The Performative, Political and Technological. Gržinić and Šmid are part of the archive bild-rausch, Germany (http://bild-rausch.de/CMS).
