Avla NLB Gallery was established in 1971 in the entrance hall of the headquarters of the largest Slovene bank - Nova Ljubljanska Banka d d (NLB), in the city centre of Ljubljana, close to the Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre. The NLB has purchased thousands of high-quality art works which now form the Nova ljubljanska banka (NLB) Art Collection, established in 2000.

In addition to presentation of works from the NLB art collection, the gallery presents temporary exhibitions of current works in the field of visual communication, covering graphic design, illustration and photography. These temporary exhibitions have been organised for several years by the NGO Emzin Institute of Creative Production. Recent international exhibitions since 2005 have included Polish Film Posters, Images of Jazz on Polish Posters and an exhibition of photography, paintings and illustrations of the Winter&Winter Publishing House. Recent photography exhibitions have presented the Milčo Mančevski exhibit 'The Street', and the photographs of Tošo Dabac and Franco Pinna; illustration exhibitions have shown the work of Radovan Jenko, Jugoslav Vlahović and Luba Lukova; and design exhibitions have presented the whole range of eminent authors and groups, including Luc(as) de Groot, Philippe Apeloig, Seymour Chwast, Paula Scher, April Greiman, Studio Najbrt, Niklaus Troxler, Piter Bankov and studio DesignDepot and Leonardo Sonnoli. The gallery co-operates regularly with the USA, France, the Netherlands, Poland and Italy.
