In 2025, Slovenia will host the European Capital of Culture (in Slovenian: Evropska prestolnica kulture (EPK)) for the second time, after Maribor in 2012 (cf. Maribor, European Capital of Culture 2012).
In December 2020 the European Capitals of Culture Expert panel announced that the city of Nova Gorica has been recommended for the European Capital of Culture 2025 title in Slovenia.
In the year 2025, Chemnitz will be a European Capital of Culture in Germany.
The first round of the ECoC 2025 selection
After evaluating applications from six competing cities a panel of 12 independent experts recommended in March 2020 the shortlist of four cities: Ljubljana, Nova Gorica, Piran and Ptuj (the other two cities in competition were Kranj and Lendava-Ledva).
In the pre-selection round in Germany five cities were short-listed: Chemnitz, Hannover, Hildesheim, Magdeburg and Nurnberg.
