The legal basis for cooperation is the 2001 Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Slovenia and the Government of the Republic of Austria on cooperation in culture, education and science. On the basis of this agreement, a second working programme for the period 2008–2012 was signed in Ljubljana in May 2007. The 1998 Agreement on Cooperation in Science and Technology also covers the area of science.
Slovenia and Austria successfully cooperate within the Regional Partnership (Slovenia, Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, and Poland), Central European Initiative, the Danube Cooperation Process and the Alps-Adriatic Working Community. Slovenia and Austria cooperate within the Operational Programme Slovenia-Austria 2007–2013 (the European Regional Development Fund).
A complex cross-border cooperation project at municipal level is the Cross-Border Municipal Working Community Dežela pod Peco – Petzenland, with nine municipalities taking part (5 Slovene municipalities). The project includes also some cultural tourism projects.
Culture.si offers information on Slovene cultural producers, venues, festivals and support services, all in one place. It encourages international cultural exchange in the fields of arts, culture and heritage. The portal and its content is owned and funded by the Ministry of Culture, funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Plan and developed by Ljudmila Art and Science Laboratory.
