The study of Philosophy at the University of Ljubljana has existed since its founding in 1919. The Department of Philosophy presently offers three undergraduate programmes: single-subject (BA Philosophy), two-subject with teaching specialisation (BA Teacher of Philosophy and another subject) and two-subject (BA Philosophy and another subject). The postgraduate study of Philosophy is conducted as a three-year PhD programme.

History

The beginings of the Department from the 1920s on have been influenced by philosopher France Veber, the first professor at the Department. His main topics were related to the History of Philosophy, Systematic Philosophy and Ethics, Esthetics and Cognitive Philosophy. The emphasis on the Philosophy of Historical Materialism was stronger after 1945 when the study was contucted by profesors Boris Ziherl and Cene Logar.

International Cooperation

Graduate studies include a two-year Masters Degree programme and a guided PhD programme, both covered with European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), which allows for participants to combine their postgraduate studies in Ljubljana with their study on other universities, or to complete all of their postgraduate studies in Ljubljana. Exchange programmes (SOCRATES-ERASMUS, CEEPUS, university exchanges) also enable professors and students from other universities to participate in the graduate programme.

Both the Association for Analytical Philosophy and Science Philosophy and the Slovene Philosophical Association are based here. The Department has its own library.
