Mat kultra was established in 2004 as a non-profit cultural organisation (ustanova) with the aim of promoting cultural activities in the Zasavje region. Its board consists of nine representatives of various cultural fields coming from several towns in the region.

Its first important project was the first Mat kultra Zasavje Street Art Festival in June 2004. In the following year it set up the Mat kultra Multimedia Centre.

Mat kultra engages in production, co-production and publishing, as well as the presentation of stage performances, concerts, film, visual arts and media arts, it organises lectures, offers assistance to artists and organisations to the organisation of various cultural events and also offers space for seminars and workshops.

Mat kultra's facilities include a gallery space where exhibitions of work by younger artists take place and the results of creative workshops are presented to public.
