Named after Slovene graphic artist, illustrator and caricaturist Hinko Smrekar (1883-1942), the national awards for the best Slovene book illustrators are presented every two years by the [[Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU)]] at the [[Biennial of Slovene Book Illustration]]. They include the Smrekar Award for best illustration, Smrekar plaques and special mentions for innovative approach and original drawing, as well as an award for the best young creator and an award for lifetime achievement which has previously been bestowed on Marlenka Stupica, Ančka Gošnik Godec, Jelka Šubert Reichman, Marija Vogelnik and Milan Bizovičar.
