Named after Slovene graphic artist, illustrator and caricaturist Hinko Smrekar (1883-1942), the Hinko Smrekar Award is the national award for the best Slovene book illustrators. Bestowed since 1993, it signify the summit of each Biennial of Slovene Book Illustration, organised by Cankarjev dom Culture and Congress Centre in co-operation with the Illustration Section of the Union of Slovene Fine Arts Associations (ZDSLU).


Beside the Smrekar Award for lifetime achievement, it also includes awards for best illustration, Smrekar plaques and special mentions for innovative approach and original drawing, as well as an award for the best young creator.

The Smrekar Award for lifetime achievements has previously been bestowed to Marlenka Stupica, Ančka Gošnik Godec, Jelka Šubert Reichman, Marija Vogelnik, Milan Bizovičar, Marjanca Jemec Božič. In 2008 it went to Štefan Planinc.

The Smrekar Award for best illustration recieved Marija Lucija Stupica (2x), Dušan Muc, Rudi Skočir, Zvonko Čoh, Jelka Godec Schmidt, Alenka Sottler, and Kostja Gatnik in 2008.
