Established in 2004, the Institute for Linguistic Studies examines the combined regions of Primorska, Karst (across the Slovene-Italian border), and Istria as a linguistically complex space and as a historical, ethnic, and national cultural intersection of Central Europe and the Mediterranean.

Utilizing the latest finding in linguistic research, the Institute takes into account the many facets of Slovenian language studies, for example, multilingualism, dialectology, the public use of Slovenian, and teaching Slovenian in Slovene schools in the Primorska region.
