Established in 2004, the Institute for Linguistic Studies focuses on the studies of the combined space of the Slovene Littoral (Primorska), Karst (across the Slovene-Italian border), and Istria as a linguistically complex region, as well as an historical, ethnic and national cultural point of contact between Central Europe and the Mediterranean.

The institute takes into account the latest linguistic findings, incorporating various aspects of Slovene language studies, especially in the field of multilingualism, dialectology, the public use of the Slovene language, and teaching Slovenian language in Slovene littoral schools.

The institute has conducted among others the following research projects: Slovene Linguistic Impacts on the Italian Dialect of Trieste (in progress), Dialectal Atlas of Slovene Istria and Karst (concluded in 2009), and The Idea of Nation in the Slovenian Reformation of the 16th Century and its European Context (till 2007).
