The Institute of Social Sciences forms part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. The beginnings of the Institute are linked to Institute of Sociology and Philosophy, which was established in 1958 at the University of Ljubljana. In 1991 the Institute of Social Sciences was formed. There are 19 research centres within the framework of the Institute, which initiate and conduct basic applied and developmental research projects in the social sciences. These centres execute about 80 research projects annually, funded partly by the state and partly by contracts with other organisations or institutions.

The centres of the Institute are: the Public Opinion and Mass Communication Research Centre (CPOMC), the Centre for Cultural and Religious Studies (CRS), the Centre for Political Science Research (CPSR), the Centre for Spatial Sociology (CSS), the Social Communication Research Centre (SCRC), the International Relations Research Centre (IRRC), the Centre for Policy Evaluation and Strategic Studies (CPESS), the Defence Research Centre (DRC), the Centre for Organisational and Human Resources Research (COHR), the Centre for Social Studies of Science (CSSS), the Centre for Methodology and Informatics (CMI), the Centre for Theoretical Sociology (CTS), the Centre for Welfare Studies (CWS), the Centre for Social Psychology (CSP), the Centre for Comparative Corporate and Development Studies (CCDS), Research Centre for the Terminology of Social Sciences and Journalism, Centre for Critical approach to Political Science, Center for Analysis of Administrative-political Processes and Institutions, and the Centre for Anthropological Research (CAR).

Within the Institute operates The Social Science Data Archive (ADP), a national resource centre. The Archive collects the data from academich research projects, government or commercial surveys. The catalogue of the Archive is available online.
