Beside the Art Salon, Ptuj and the exhibiting space of the Old Prisons, Ptuj [Stari zapori], the Mihelič Gallery, Ptuj has as one of three on the contemporary art focused spaces of the Ptuj Regional Museum the longest tradition. It was established already in 1967. Located in the round tower on the Drava river, the Mihelič Gallery is since 1992 named after painter France Mihelič, who produced some of his major works between 1936 and 1941 when he taught at Ptuj Grammar School. An extensive collection of drawings and prints by him are keeped by Ptuj Regional Museum and are exhibited in its graphics collection. Annual the Mihelič Gallery features up to nine exhibitions.

History

Erected in 1551, the old tower on the Drava river was the largest of six that once formed Ptuj's Renaissance defence system. Originally it had no roof because it was used as a gun cannon platform. When the tower lost its original function, it was initially converted into apartments, and then in 1938 into an exhibition space. For some years a viticulture collection was displayed here, but since 1967 the space has been used for occasional art exhibitions.

Programme

Beside solo exhibitions of regional authors as Andrej Božič, based in Ptuj, or Polona Petek, Maribor based artist of young generation, it features also other Slovene artists like Klementina Golja. Such exhibitions are as a rule on the view on all locations of the museum which are covering the contemporary art production, sometimes also in the exhibiting area of the Ivan Potrč Library, Ptuj.

Mihelič gallery ist a co-presenter of the Art Stays, International Festival of Contemporary Art that is organised each sommer by the Art Stays Cultural Association. Its exhibition is traditionalz featured in August and has to be understood as the most important international event of the Mihelič Gallery. In 2009 the cooperation between both organisers resulted also the exhibition of Italian Graphics [Italijanska grafika]], curated by Marika Vicari.
