The Municipality of Jesenice covers a total area of 76 square kilometres and has a population of 21,386 people (2002) living in 13 settlements in the north western part of Slovenia, beneath the Alps. An old ironworks city since the 16th century, it boasts many technical monuments as well as manors and churches. May is a traditional month of daffodils at Golica Hill above Jesenice, which is also an important centre for skiing; during the summer months the area attracts mountaineering tourists. Jesenice’s old ironworks will soon be replaced by new industrial facilities.

The Social Activities and General Affairs Department of Jesenice Municipality is responsible for various cultural programmes and projects, including artistic creation, cinematography, libraries, museums, protecting the built cultural heritage, natural monuments and amateur cultural activities.

The local branches of the [[Union of Cultural Societies of Slovenia (ZKDS)]] and the [[Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia (JSKD)]] facilitate the activities of local cultural organisations and act as mediators in respect of state and municipal funding.
