The Municipality of Vrhnika covers a total area of 126 square kilometres and has a population of 17,651 people (2002) living in 21 settlements. The municipality recently initiated a town-twinning project with Gonars, Italy.

Numerous cultural institutions are located in Vrhnika, known as the birthplace of Ivan Cankar, radical writer and liberal mind of Slovene modernism. These include the Cankar's Library Vrhnika and the Ivan Cankar Institute Vrhnika which organises a regular programme of cultural activities.

The local branches of the Union of Cultural Societies of Slovenia (ZKDS) and the Public Fund for Cultural Activities of the Republic of Slovenia (JSKD) facilitate the activities of local cultural organisations and act as mediators in respect of state and municipal funding.
